Sublimation, in physics, is the process in which a solid substance turns directly into a gas without going through the liquid phase. Normally, when a substance is heated, it melts, and when it becomes hotter, it turns into a gas, but in sublimation, the solid state changes directly to gas upon heating. It occurs when the pressure of the surrounding environment is below the vapor pressure of the substance. Sublimation is commonly observed in dry ice, camphor, mothballs, and snow in cold temperatures. The opposite of sublimation is deposition, where a gas directly turns into a solid without going through the liquid phase. Sublimation is used in many industrial processes, such as the production of freeze-dried food, purification of some chemical compounds, and creating sublimation 3D printed objects.
